Because his parents were Italian immigrants, they had to have pronounced the surname “mahn-CHEE-nee” instead of “man-SEE-nee” as Henry pronounced that name.

Wow, I just listened to this entire album that I didn’t know existed until now. Dizzy was in total beast mode just as much as Lalo’s charts were off the charts.

"Quest for perfection." It would have been a good start if he had dealt first with his personal life. A huge, huge kudos, though, for his long support of many black musicians: including Pearl Bailey, Roy Eldridge, and Billie Holiday.

A fascinating series, had looked for a good discussion of this giant of popular music culture for some time. As a young pianist I was fascinated by Legrand. I could also identify with his childhood (pre Conservatoire). Although I would have liked to know more about his childhood and adolesence, and how this drove him in later life. Nevertheless, from a young age he had the best education for a musician possible, and he really owes France and its public education system a lot. I really do not think such an education would have been possible in Anglo-Saxon countries, certainly not at that age. It was interesting how he writes in ink. I would have liked to have known more about that. But it suggests that he learned how to get things down on paper extremely well. I have learned that the ability to notate is crucial. Many people have infinite musical ideas. Few can get them down on paper. The documentary was also interesting as it did shy away from also giving a critique. And compared to 20, 30 years ago I do now listen to Legrand with more of a critical ear, especially his film scores. Legrand himself says that film scoring requires great humility, but I do not think he always followed that counsel himself. There is a big difference between a good musician and a good film composer. Nevertheless in the classical world, I don't know if he would have succeeded. Could he write a large scale work like a symphony that has painstaking contrapuntal unity but must sound to the listener like it fell from the sky? I think this also takes another type of humility. Legrant loved life, but the great composers did not quite live life the way Legrand did. In someways he fitted the Hollywood role and life. But I am very grateful for what Legrand gave us. RIP and thank you for the music. Thanks particularly for Cherbourg, Rochefort, and the brilliant finale to Yentl. It will never end.

God this takes me back to Monday nights not just Alan but later years with Humph and followed by big band special. Thanks to Dad I was brought up on not only Basie, Duke and others going back to 1920s Louis Hot Five and Seven but also the best of British. First was the fine Ambrose band in which Ted along with other notable players such as Sid Phillips were members. The Heath band in my humble opinion were not only the finest we ever had but one of the best world wide of all time.
